Carlos Slim Helú was born into a wealthy family. His father Julián Slim Haddad began a store with his brothers called La Estrella de Oriente (“the Star of the East”) which was a dry goods store formed in 1911. He and his 4 brothers contributed 25,800 pesos or the equivalent of about $2,490. By 1921 the store had acquired $100,000 in merchandise.
